Creating light and furniture were the guidelines that directed the development of contemporary interior architecture. Architects and designers have applied creativity, skill, technology to the development of innovative housing solutions and original furniture. Design, however, does not only express itself through objects, such as lamps, but also in the distribution of spaces, in the relative juxtaposition of volume and void, in the organization of light and of the lighted ambiance.
Architecture, shapes, materials, but also size, proportions and colors are perceived through the human eyes. It is light that reveal them to the observer, which in turn becomes part of the architectural project because of this perception. Light reveals not only visual but also physical and emotional sensations. Numerous studies have shown the correlation between lighting and psychophysical conditions, emphasizing a broad spectrum of effects that light is able to induce on the human body and behavior.
Starting from this new concept, from studies and the contributions made to the psychology of perception, and from the revolutionary work of architects such as Richard Kelly, modern lighting design has begun to explore the light in its infinite variety. Approach to lighting has evolved from the purely technical problem of illumination, namely the amount of light, to the recognition of the various functions of light, in a way that fully appreciates its quality and applications.
